Pegboard: old fashioned or still very useful?

The term ‘Pegboard’ is commonly used to cover a variety of materials and mainly indicated a sheet of tempered hardboard, metal or wood predrilled with evenly spaced holes.   I was recently asked by a customer if we supply ‘proper old fashioned pegboard’? (Meaning the hardboard type). Unfortunately we don’t, it’s difficult to find but it is still possible to buy it from certain outlets.

Perforated hardboard is made of wood fibres combined with resin and then tempered.  Perforated wood is usually made from an inexpensive wood (which can warp and splinter over time) and can be treated with chemicals for strength.  Metal pegboard is made from steel.   I have even seen composite pegboard (plastic in layman’s terms).

Pegboard, or in shelving terms ‘perforated back panels’ are exceptionally useful in a retail environment and indeed it is very commonly used when shop fitting.  Whilst hardboard, wood and composite type are great and inexpensive for small areas, they tend to look tired and old very quickly and regularly need replacing.  Metal pegboard is designed to be long lasting, strong, versatile and cosmetically pleasing.

There are a huge range of accessories available for pegboard such as single peg hooks, euro peg hooks, specialised hinged hooks, crimped hooks, baskets and you can even slatboxes by using an adapter.

In our opinion, pegboard is not old fashioned and indeed, is a very much used modern day product.  It is an essential consideration when designing your shop shelving.  Of course,  perforated back panels can be combined with plain panels minimising cost whilst maximising hanging space.  Don’t forget, you can always use slatwall panels or metal slatted back panels instead and that we can help advise you on any aspect of shop shelving including the most cost effective option.
