Shop Fitting in the 1940’s

It finally feels like summer has arrived.  The usual annual events are taking place and the good weather is bringing out family picnics and days out to the beach.  My family and I were at one such annual event at the weekend taking place at a local historic National Trust property.  It was a WW2 extravaganza with everything from tanks to fashion.  During the day, we wandered round looking at the military vehicles, watched with awe as a Dakota performed a very low flypast and marvelled at how life was in the 1940’s.  We, of course, had the obligatory picnic in the sun whilst watching the many people dressed in 1940’s attire…

During the evening, the organisers held a fashion show displaying military uniforms (very itchy on the skin!) to woman’s work wear and party dresses.  This was followed by a dance, 1940’s music of course during which I learned some of the Lindy hop (I really wasn’t very good at it though).  We joined in the dancing in full 40’s gear complete with hairdo and picnic with strawberries and cream.

Many important things happened during the 1940’s, not least of which was the war.  I’m not going to go through all the war related events today but did you know that ball point pens, something we use every single day, first went on sale in 1944? The very first computer was built and the microwave oven was created (they were very different to today’s versions).  In 1947 the Polaroid camera was invented and finally in 1949 the first non-stop flight around the world occurred.    Ladies were discovering fashion and the retail industry was beginning to thrive.  Shop fitting consisted of long and simple wooden shelves fixed to the walls, perhaps a table in the middle of the store and maybe a pigeon hole cabinet behind the wooden counter which usually ran the length of the store.

What has all that got to do with slatwall panels, shelving or shop fittings in the 21st century?  Absolutely nothing, but I hope you enjoyed reading about my delve into the 1940’s.
