How much weight can Slatwall hold?

We’ve recently covered the topic of shop shelving and how much weight it can take, and the permissible loads but the questions remains of how much weight can slatwall hold?  Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to this often asked question.  There are many variables that can affect slatboards, not least the type of wall it is being fitted to.  What we can do is try to give you some guidelines as to how best to look after your slatwall.

Care of your slatwall panels starts when you accept your delivery.  Slatwall is a heavy product and ideally needs 2 people to handle it.  Store your slatwall in a clean, dry environment and allow it some time to acclimatise. Slatwall can expand and contract dependant on heat/dampness.  Read our blog on installing your slatwall to ensure you fit it correctly.  If you look after you slatwall panels, it will look after your products and will itself last for many years.

Once you have installed your slatwall, spend some time thinking about the best way to distribute your products for display.  Try to spread the weight evenly over the panel and take care not to overload any one groove.  Avoid putting heavy items on the edge of shelves or the end of hooks.  Similarly, don’t put too many items on your accessories.  PVC inserts are great for most products but for medium to heavy items, we recommend using Aluminium inserts which are designed to hold heavier weights, they look great too!

We also supply timber shelves to match your slatwall panels.  These come in two standard sizes 1200mm x 200mm and 1200mm x 300mm, along with other bespoke sizes.  All our timber shelves are supplied with a pair of heavy duty brackets per shelf.  If you are displaying substantially heavy items on your shelves (such as books, motorcycle helmets, heavy car parts for example) Aluminium inserts are a must and also consider using 3 brackets per shelf, we will happily supply additional brackets on request.

And finally, inspect the panel as you go, if the groove is showing signs of strain take some weight off and add another hook, balled arm or hanging rail.

We regularly supply slatwall panels and shelving throughout the retail sector (and for some home use too!) for heavy and bulky items, talk to us about what you are displaying and our friendly team are always ready to help and advise.
