Whatever industry or sector your business covers, location is usually fundamental to the success (or failure) of most businesses. Sometimes the choice of location is fairly obvious, i.e. shops need to be close to other shops, large supermarkets/diy stores can be located together on a retail park on the outskirts of town. For other businesses, it’s not just about the town; the area of the country can also be very relevant. We chose Bristol for some extremely good reasons……Bristol is a wonderful city, culturally diverse and steeped in history (not all of it good!) Fabulous architecture and an array of Arts can be found within the city, not to mention our famous SS Great Britain, Clifton Suspension Bridge and a wide choice of theatres and concert venues. The surrounding countryside is varied and there are a few AONB (Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty). It great for walking the dogs, entertaining the kids and it’s close to the Jurassic coast! Bristol reminds me very much of Edinburgh; I’m Scottish and rather loyal to Scotland…..Oops, I digress. I am rather passionate about Bristol too and tend to waffle on a bit, back to topic!
As a shopfitting supplier covering the whole of the UK and Ireland, one of our major considerations when choosing a location was transport links. All our warehouses are based near cities for this reason. Cost also played a part and whilst any City Centre location is going to be pricey, for us a place on the outskirts or in the suburbs was better as we did not need that important ‘high street visibility’. Warehouses are much better placed in an industrial estate as, let’s be honest, no one wants to really look at a warehouse type building in the middle of town, no matter how sympathetically designed it is. We also considered our employees, all our locations have parking and are easy to find. (This was important for our transport links too.) Networking was factored in, as we needed access to engineers for our machinery, specialist equipment and of course, the demands for our services are greater in a city.
Plan your location carefully, take time to consider all the relevant points and don’t forget to consider employees too. Locating your business correctly can make all the difference to your success.
